007 GoldenEye a look back at this Classic First Person Shooter for the Nintendo64 #Classic Gaming #FPS Life #First Person Shooter
When I think back on the beginnings of my first person shooter existence a couple of things come to mind. The mouse and keyboard handling some Doom action and the major transition to the console which GoldenEye single handedly accomplished. The Nintendo64 was a major contender in the console wars during the late 90's and behind Mario's games GoldenEye 007 was there Golden Goose.
Following the story line of the film of the same name British secret agent James Bond fights to prevent an evil syndicate from using a satellite weapon to cause a financial meltdown. Moving away from the cartoonish Doom and more into a realistic look help GoldenEye capture a greater audience. This earned them rave reviews by critics and marked them as the new standard for which First Person Shooter will be compared by.
There are many stand out feature that assisted in the mass appeal for the game. Split screen multi player was huge the ability to sit with a few friends and engage in modern warfare before the call of duty franchise was weened off of milk felt powerful. The ground work for the Marathon/Halo masses was set.
Stealth the heart pumping decision to wait and sneak by the guards or run and gun like your favorite Action Hero was yours to make and that lead to some replay-able moments.Zoomable Sniper Rifle! "Are you serious" I think those were my first words when it came to sniping the whole lot of enemies and strolling through a section I previously ran gunned and died. By far GoldenEye 007 has done more for the shooter genre than any other game.
